The State Railway of Thailand operate an efficient rail service down from Bangkok to Surratthani and up from Had Yai in the deep south of Thailand. Overnight sleeper trains are the best way to go, with clean and secure carriages, waiter service and clean crisp bedding.

Most long haul bus journeys in Thailand are taken on private air-conditioned tour coaches. They are the cheapest way to get around, but on longer journeys, they can become a bit tiresome, thus involving stop-offs in your journey plan can make for a more relaxing and interesting trip. All buses and trains stop in Suratthani town centre, where you will be provided with a connecting bus to the appropriate ferry pier enabling you to continue your over-sea journey to Koh Pha Ngan, approximately three and a half hours away.

Koh Pha Ngan is located in the Southern gulf of Thailand, with the mainland district centre being Suratthani, one of the main transport hubs of the south. From here a host of destinations can be reached by boat, bus, train and even plane from Suratthani's Airport; which is slightly cheaper to fly to and from than Koh Samui and is served by Thai Airways.
